Witness Testimony given by Elfric Wells Chalmers Kearney (7)

3163, And the number of trains a day?---

126.

3164, The total train miles?---

315.

3165, With an average between of 11 1/2 minutes?---

Yes.

3166, So that the total would be 334 trains per day, 1,115 train miles over all tubes, an average of 4.3 minutes between the arrivals of trains?---

Yes.

3167, In your opinion is that ample provision of tubes and railways for the 334 trains per day?---

I think I have already explained that in my opinion, and I do not see how it can be disputed, either the north group or the South group is physically capable of dealing with the whole traffic quite easily.

3168, On the question of the number of locomotives required, taking an average speed of approximately three miles an hour through the 24 hours for each locomotive, the mileage for the tubes would be covered by how many locomotives?---

I think 16 locomotives would be ample, but I suggest a small margin, an ample margin for contingencies, of 25 per cent., say 20 locomotives altogether.

3169, You want the other four for stand-by and repairs?---

Yes.

3170, Would this computation, do you think, be an ample margin supposing we allow a stop for each locomotive of 15 minutes in the Clearing House and 15 minutes again for changing trains? On the average in both cases I think it will be seen that a train velocity of only six miles per hour would be required to do the work, would not it?---

Yes.
