Witness Testimony given by Elfric Wells Chalmers Kearney (Part 6)

3150, In the case of a locomotive bringing in a trainload of trucks by the eastern tube from Bishopsgate you would , in that case, have to have the locomotive uncoupled, would you not?---

Yes.

3151, Unless it was proceeding in a northward direction?---

Yes. Of course, at night time, if the route were open it could go straight forward down on the Midland along the Metropolitan, and so through Liverpool Street station.

3152, Error, this question number has been omitted.

3153,  And if it were for a trainload of trucks coming from Bishopsgate, to return eastward, you would have to uncouple the locomotive and use it for a goods train going out east?---

In the ordinary way, yes.

3154, I think you said there are about 334 trains that would have to be brought in and out of the Clearing House; that is your estimate of the numbers?---

That is based on present-day traffic.

3155, What would the train miles amount to per day?---

A total of under 1,200.

3156, At the Great Northern Goods depot there would be 149 trains a day?---

Yes.

3157, And the miles per round trip would be four?---

Yes. That is, counting from the centre of the Clearing House to the Great Northern Goods depot, which is about a mile off the map.

3158, The total train miles on these tubes would be 600?---

Yes.

3159, Would you refer to the South Clearing House and the Blackfriars Goods depot?---

That is from G down through H to the Blackfriars Goods Yard, which is just the other side of the River Thames; 3-4 miles per round trip.

3160, How many trains in a day?---

Fifty-nine trains with a total of 200 trains.

3161, An Average interval between of 24 minutes?---

Yes.
