Mr. Gattie's Scheme, proposed Goods Clearing House. (Artist impression).

This diagram shows a vertical section of one corner of the proposed Goods Clearing House. Trains run direct into the building beneath road level, and the goods, all packed in "containers," are straightway hoisted or lowered to the various levels (of which only three are shown here) for sorting and despatch. The process I greatly facilitated by movable ways, consisting of "truckers," constantly in motion at various speeds, which, by an electrical device, are able to transfer trays of goods from one moving platform to another.

Thanks to Roy Horniman (Author) and George Routledge & sons, (publisher's), for the diagram and text.
