State Owned Railways.
Once a source of revenue to their Governments, the State owned railways have become a financial menace. That is the position, not in one state, but in all states.
The taxpayers lot would be easy if the always mounting deficits from these concerns could be got rid of. How is it to be done?
Intelligent people are hardening on the convict that only private enterprise, freed from the stranglehold of politics and red tape, can hope to deal successfully and finally with the problem.
At the present time two projects for privately - constructed railways --- Manly to Newport and the Eastern Suburbs --- are before the Government. Given cert safeguards, it might well be worth while allowing private capital the chance it asks. Australia cannot be blind to the experience of every railway owning country.
Politics and paying lines do not go together.
