Brisbane March 1931.
CONSIDERATION BY COUNCIL.
The construction of a tunnel under the Brisbane River may be considered by the General Purposes Committee of the City Council when it meets to discuss the erection of a central toll bridge.
Mr. Kearney addressed the Works Committee of the council. It was stated subsequently that while the construction of a tunnel under the River at Kangaroo was not favoured, it was believed that such a scheme might be practicable at other sites such as Bulimba.
Mr. Kearney stated that he inspected the Kangaroo Point site, and it was his definite opinion that a bridge would be preferable to a tunnel with an alignment North and South, but if it was decided to construct from the end of Queen To Kangaroo Point then a tunnel would be considerably cheaper. Mr. Kearney visited the Bulimba site and will formulate a scheme for the City Council.
Mr. Kearney discussed the proposals with the city engineer (Mr. E. F. Gilchrist) and Professor R. W. Hawker who presented him with a copy of the report of the Cross River Commission.
Mr. Kearney had been impressed with the business - like way that affairs were conducted here. He had been in the city only 24 hours, and he had been to see the Premier, the Lord Mayor and other executives, all of whom showed a thorough grasp of his proposals.
