RIVER TUNNEL EXPERT INTERVIEWS PREMIER.

Tube Promoter Sees Moore

Government Guarantee Wanted

Referred to Council.

The project to construct a tunnel for all classes of traffic under the River, was placed before the Premier, by Mr. E. W. Chalmers Kearney, today.

Mr. Moore, referred the promoter to the City Council.

During the course of their conversations, the Premier told Mr. Kearney that he felt that a cross river tunnel would be quite useless unless it took all ordinary road vehicles, as he thought the paramount question was the solving of the problem created by the heavy vehicular traffic from Bulimba and the Valley across to Kangaroo Point and the south side. If only to be used for tramcars and foot traffic the tunnel would not be of much use.

The question raised was not one of giving a franchise for the construction of a tunnel and the levying of tolls over a period, said Mr. Moore.

It was purely a question of cross river traffic in which the Council would be chiefly interested party, and in respect of which the Government was being asked to guarantee interest and sinking fund.
