A Most Enthusiastic Public Meeting.
The Waveley Council, called a public meeting to insist upon the immediate construction of the Eastern Suburbs Railway. This resulted in an overwhelmingly meeting in its favour.
The meeting was held at the Council Chambers at Bondi last week.
The chamber was packed and seating accomodation could not be found for all. The meeting under able guidance of the Mayor (Alderman David Hunter) was a most spirited one.
Mr. Sullivan M . L. A. for Paddington and explained how difficult it was to control a meeting that was on point so differently composed and paid a high tribute to the Mayor, for the masterly manner in which he conducted the meeting.
At the end of the meeting Mr. Cleminson moved s motion, seconded by Mr J. J. Clearly, that a representative deputation wait upon the Premier with a request that he should provide forthwith out of the accumulated funds of the unemployment relief fund a sum of £6,000,000 for the immediate construction of the Eastern Suburbs Railway, and that all work theron all work shall be paid for at the award rates.
It is therefore now up to the Mayor of every municipality to immediately get busy to force the Premier's hand. There are times in life when a man must be driven to do his duty and we say it avisidly that if the Premier does not wake up and give the Eastern Suburbs it's railway the issue will become apolitical one, and will probably throw the U. A. P. out of office at the forthcoming election.
