From the Kearney Files,
Bondi Daily 13th October 1934.
As an old resident of the Eastern Suburbs, I have looked forward for many years to the time when our badly needed railway would be built; for many years it has been advocated only to be forgotten by successive Governments. Every year our traffic to the Eastern Suburbs increases and now it is almost impossible for our obsolete trams to move the people and the only solution of our traffic problem is an up - to - date underground railway.
As the Kearney Railway Company have offered to finance and build an electric underground railway and as we have thousands of unemployed on the construction of the railway, may I suggest to the Government that they accept the company's offer at once and give our Austrailan men an opportunity to get back to work on this very necessary job.
