£10,000,000 Offer to Build Railway to Newport.
If the State Government accepts the offer of an English company £10,000,000 will be made available for railway construction in this state, one line being an electric service to Newport.
Representatives of the company explained the scheme last night to the Manly -Warringah Railway League.
The company is the Kearney High Speed Tube Railway Co Ltd, of London, and it's representatives, Messrs, DeAnn and Booth, told an enthusiastic meeting that the company would construct the line, providing permission was granted, and a franchise given to control the line for 60 years.
After 60 years the line would be handed over free to the Government, and the rolling stock would be sold at a reasonable valuation.
The meeting decided to urge the Public Works Committee to push on with a decision regarding the line.
The State Treasurer (Mr Stevens), said last night that it would take many months to go into the position and give a decision.
It is understood that the company proposes a monorail fitted with a gyroscope,* and trains travelling at 100 miles an hour.
Decisions regarding two other lines, which private capital has asked to be allowed to build, are also awaiting the approval of the Government -- the line to Captain's Flat and one from Sutherland to Cronulla.
* The Kearney High Speed Railway was never fitted with gyroscopic momentum. Gravity and Electricity were the main forces of propulsion and retardation.
