WORKS DEPARTMENT SCEPTICAL

The Minister for Works considers that if Mr. Kearney succeeded in saving £3,812,000 on the cost of the city railway and North Shore Bridge, as mentioned in todays cables, he would have a balance on the wrong side of the ledger.
The estimated cost of a bridge designed for railway traffic and a direct railway from Milson's Point to Central Station is about £3,000,000. The scheme Parliament is to be asked to approve is for a railway and ordinary traffic bridge, and an oval city railway, with trains running both ways. The estimated cost is £4,600,000 of which the bridge will absorb about £2,750,000, including interest during the course of construction. A bridge for a railway only could be built for £1,000,000.
