Modern Transport 4th October 1919
Following a resolution passed by the Tramways Committee of the Barking Town Council, on September 22, the Council, on September 23, adopted a resolution that the scheme outlined by, Mr. E. W. Chalmers for the construction of a railway system between Barking and Beckton be adopted, subject to the terms of lease, and to any difficulties being raised by the Ministry of Transport. The terms of the lease, subject to confirmation by the Ministry of Transport, provide that the Barking Council shall loan to the Kearney High Speed Railway Co., Limited, the sum of ,£20,000 for the purpose of the reconstruction, the Company to pay interest at the rate of 5 1/2 per cent, per annum, plus £500 per annum for the redemption of the loan. The company to retain the lease for a term of 99 years.
Under the scheme, the present tramway, which is being worked at a loss, would be closed, and the section from the Bascule Bridge to Beckton Gas Works reconstructed on the Kearney system. No intermediate stops would be made and a five minute service during sixteen hours a day is to be given. It is claimed by the promoters that the adoption of the scheme will save the Barking Town Council £7,000 for carrying out the proposed renewals.
