We understand that during the past few days a scheme has been prepared and placed before the Lord Provost and City Council of Glasgow for the installation of the Kearney High - Speed Railway Company's tube system in this tunnel in this tunnel and it is confidently anticipated that the proposal will meet with early acceptance. Two alternatives have been suggested --- one that the City Council should lease the tube to the Kearney High - Speed Railway Co, Ltd., at   ra nominal rental, the Company equipping the tunnel and working it with  a guarantee not to levy a fare higher than a halfpenny per passenger per journey. Alternatively the City Council are asked to give the Kearney High - Speed Railway Company the order for the equipment of the tunnel, in which event the city authorities would defray the cost of such equipment. The tunnel could then be operated either at the aforementioned fare or as a free public service, at the discretion of the Council. Inthe event of the City defraying the cost of the equipment, iris regarded as essential that the Kearney High - Speed Railway Company should be retained to operate the tube, this arrangement being to their own, as well as to the public, interest. As will be seen by reference to the elevation drawing, the tunnel is level for approximately 400 ft., and there is a gradient of 1 in 3. Access will be obtained by means of the existing stairways on to the platforms specially constructed to a depth of 16 ft. below street level at the Finnieston and a depth of 23 ft. on the Mavisbank side. The two stations will be uniform type, each consisting of two platforms one on either side, for loading and unloading - simultaneously.
