The essentials of a high-speed may be set down as under :-
- It must eliminate lateral oscillation;
- It should be able to show moderate working costs;
- It must be reasonably cheap to construct;
- It must permit of reasonably simple switches;
- It should be capable of being built coincident with existing lines;
- It should be capable of being fitted to existing tunnels;
- It should be capable of being easily employed as a surface, underground or elevated railway;
- It should not concentrate the forces due to centrifugal action and wind on a single line;
- It should not depend for the stability of its cars upon a moving mechanism.
