BRIDGE FAVOURED
THE TUBE LOSES
The Railway Commissioners do not agree with Mr. R. O'Halloran's favourable view of the Kearney tube, as published.
In a statement issued yesterday the Commissioners expressed the opinion that the only method of satisfactorily dealing with the existing and future requirements of the North side of the harbour wasn't the construction of a general traffic bridge, for which tenders were about to be called.
"Even if the bridge had not been decided upon the commissioners could not recommend that any expenditure be incurred in connection with the Kearney Tube, as any such expenditure would, when the bridge is completed, be absolutely thrown away.
"Further, the Kearney tube system had, up to the present, not been adopted in any country. The weight of evidence so far available is quite unfavourable to the proposed system.
