Sydney Harbour, Bridge Vs Tunnel debate 1921

Modern Transport (London) 20th September 1921

An alternative scheme for the linking up of Sydney and North Sydney is at present being considered by the Sydney Harbour Authorities. The original scheme, which is still being inquired into, comprised the erection of a high - level bridge between Dawes's Point and Milson's Point, preliminary estimates for which amount to between £8,000,000 and £10,000,000. The bridge would be about two and a half miles long and would take nine or ten years to complete. The new proposition, which, it is claimed would effect a considerable saving in time and money, is the construction of a "tube" railway on the Kearney High Speed Railway System, details and illustrations were published in the Modern Transport. The termini for the proposed railway are Circular Quay and Milson's Point. In support of the proposition it is urged that the total cost ofaof constructing andtand equipping the line would amount to only £500,000, and that it could be put into operation within eighteen months of a commencement being made. The speed at which trains would travel namely, sixty miles an hour, would enable the journey to be completed in seventy seconds. Iris estimated that the capital cost could, with a maximum fare of one penny, be redeemed in twenty four years.
