A Proposed Tube
A Supplement to the Bridge.
Alderman A. E. What more Mayor of North Sydney stated yesterday that the Kearney High Speed Railway which it was suggested from Milson's Point to the Circular Quay would be similar to that which was to be constructed between the Strand and Crystal Palace London.
The company was prepared to carry out the work for the Government at a cost of £700,000 or to build the tube and run the railway entirely at its own risk and would enter into a bond to complete the tube. Equipped with cars ready for use within twelve months of commencing operations.
The tube scheme is not intended to take the place of the North Shore Bridge said Mr. Whatmore, but it would meet the requirements of the , Milson's Point service during the 20 years that would be required for the construction of the bridge, would I think prove a useful relieving medium for the traffic. In the event of the tube being constructed the necessity for an opposition ferry service between Milson's Point and the Circular Quay would in my opinion cease to exist; but it would still be necessary to make arrangements from Blues Point (near McMahon's Point) Cremore Point and the Circular Quay.
While the project to construct a tube has been favourably received by layman, inquiry amongst engineers discusses considerable hostility. It is contended that the difficulties and expense of constructing such a tube as is proposed are under estimated and the unstable nature of the Sandstone harbour bottom has not been fully taken into account.
The air pressure at 200 feet below low water mark it is pointed out would be so exacting upon the health of the workmen that it would only be partly compensated by the receipt of very high wages.
