Plucky climb for the flag.

Last Friday when the news arrived at Chiswick that the Bill for the proposed tube from Hammersmith to Charing Cross had been passed. It was ordered that the flags should be strung across the street and hoisted on the flagstaff on top of the London United Electric Tramways Office.
The cord at the top of the mast broke and it seemed that no one could be found with sufficient nerve to climb up and rethread the pulley.
But Mr. Elfric W .Chalmers Kearney pluckily saved the situation.
Donning an engine minders suit he climbed the pole hand over hand and amid the cheers of the crowd succeeded hoisting the Union Jack.
